Wer sitzt bei Lanz?

Markus Lanz is one of Germany's most-watched political talk shows, broadcast three nights a week on public television. Close to 300 people appeared on it in 2024. Which of them came once  which returned frequently, and where did they come from?

A year of guests read as a network

Guests were recorded for every episode broadcast in 2024. Each episode  usually features four of them, who form the nodes of the network; a line means two guests appeared together.

Change of guests across the year

Split into quarters, the network is sparser: 120 guests in the first, 128 in the second, 92 in the third and 108 in the fourth. The labelled names are the guests connected to the most others, which means they appeared across several episodes.

Prominent sectors and organizations

Politics was the largest group with 104 individuals, followed by media at 48 and think tanks and academia at 47. Among organizations, the CDU and SPD led with 25 and 21 people. Third place goes not to another party but to ZDF, the broadcaster airing the show, with 15.

However, the returning guests were almost entirely journalists: Theveßen, Bröcker, Quadbeck, Röller, Münstermann, Siems, Lehmann, Machowecz. From politics, only Stegner, Kühnert and Ramelow reach the upper ranks across the year, and each within a single quarter.
